The Big Worded Professor

I overheard a conversation today by what appeared to be a couple of high school students. I’m not exactly sure why, but when I overhear conversations by high school students and younger, I’m frequently irritated by their inexperienced viewpoints of the world around them. I guess I’m turning into that grumpy old guy everyone knows.

The boy was sharing his thoughts on art and what’s art and what’s not. The conversation eventually led to discussing communication. He was talking about a friend of his that’s now in college and has a professor that would always use really big words in class. I’m not sure if these words were considered part of the knowledge and learning they were supposed to be getting, but the kid didn’t appreciate the professor using all these words that the other students didn’t know.

Yeah, I’d hate for your intelligence to actually be challenged and stretched while you’re in college. I guess what our educationally challenged society needs is for all teachers and professors to not speak or expect any higher level of thought than the students they’re teaching in their classrooms.

I’m sure that will be the thing that really helps us all.

Can anyone tell me the relationship between the image and my post?

Well seeing as no one commented on this yet...I'll take a stab. This is from Pay it Forward and Kevin Spacey's character always uses big words in the classroom and instead of telling them the meaning of the word or instead of not using them at all, he tells them to get a dictionary and look up the word later. I think one specific moment was when he used the word "Utopia".

Maybe those high school students should do the same...

    Ha!
