The Twitter Offices

Most of my friends and family have no clue what twitter is or why I use it or like it so much. They’ve recently received lots of $$$ funding so hopefully their downtime issues will really start to get worked out.

I just found out about this article that talks about the Twitter offices and thought I’d show a photo of one of the workspaces.

What the photos didn’t capture is what’s really happening in this photo.

I Get Email From Dead People

mahatma-gandhi-email

Apparently he’s not dead and according to his e-mail he has some connection to my high school alma mater.

That in and of itself is weird because the fraction of living people that have even heard of my high school would be miniscule.

That’s just the way I roll though.

Twitter Church

I’ve had numerous people ask me recently, “What is twittering?”. Well, put twitter is simply a short status like update. It works like an SMS message or an instant message. The ties to SMS reflect in its 140 character limit per tweet. Think small chunk of information, quickly digestible.

Most people don’t get it or understand the value. Honestly, sometimes it’s hard to think about the real value as well, but here’s three instances that have made me love it:

  1. In Austin at SXSW ‘08 the b5media crew used twitter to let each other know where everyone was. We used it to schedule meetups (tweetups), lunches, dinners, rides back to the ranch, and to communicate about what seminars and sessions were interesting.
  2. If I’ve got a quick question about something, sometimes I’ll post it to twitter now instead of immediately going to Google and finding the answer. The difference here is that the answer I’ll be getting in return has now been filtered into a group of people (those I follow and follow me) that I trust for some reason and are probably involved in similar interests and activities as I am.
  3. The opportunity to be introduced and meet new people is also cool. I’ve yet to make it to an IndyTweetup, but one of these days I will.

With all of that being said, Cherie just shared with me an interesting article about a church that did a Twitter Church service:

So we started wondering, what would it be like to bring the Twitter kind of participation into Fusion in the same way we would think through any other worship interactive—something that gets people involved in what is happening—so Fusion isn’t happening “to” them but rather “with and because of and through” them.

After just working on the redesign of our own church website and thinking about ways to increase what we offer online through podcasts and blogs, the idea of reaching exponentially more people through our website and online experience than we do in our actually church buildings on Sundays is interesting.

Now, I’m coming farther away from the idea of church happening on Sundays and realizing that church needs to be happening every day in our lives and with everyone around us. Twitter isn’t going to replace real-live, in-the-flesh relationships. But it does provide us the opportunity to touch more lives than we actually can in the flesh as well.

What do you think?

Logitech VX Nano Mouse - Battery Alert

logitech-vx-nano-mouse

I’ve got to say that I have been more than extremely happy with my new Logitech VX Nano mouse. It’s got loads of features that I’ve enjoyed and a number of other ones that I haven’t even become familiar with or started using regularly.

One of the features that was actually key for me was the ability to actually turn off the mouse with some kind of button. My old mouse would just go to sleep supposedly when no movement occurred, which was nice except that when I put it in my backpack there was usually lots of movement that occurred. My daughter would say “Daddy, your backpack has a red light on inside it”. Which of course was the mouse laser proudly proclaiming it was indeed powered up and ready to point and click.

I don’t have that issue at all with the Logitech VX Nano. When I say “Off” (okay, not actually when I say off, but when I push the button) it’s off. I have come across a little bit of a frustration though in it’s “critical battery alert”. It’s warning me that the batteries are at critical power, but tells me I’ve got four days left of use. To me, four days left isn’t critical. Maybe a day is fine because finding a AAA battery really isn’t too difficult of an objective that it will take me a few days to accomplish.

I’ve also got no way to adjust this alert’s timing other than for it to tell me I have 10% power remaining, which equates to 4 days in their algorithm I guess. What I want to adjust is the actual day or percentage to warn me.

But hey! Other than that, I love my Logitech VX Nano, this along with a couple of other previous Logitech purchases makes me eager to look for other devices. I think I’m in a real need for a laptop web-cam.

Can I Put You on Hold?

I received these photos from a friend and thought there were funny enough to share with everyone. Not sure where they came from, if you know, let me know and I’ll give credit where it’s due.
