A few days ago my friend that runs the local coffee shop I frequently work from was telling me about Boxee. Pretty much all the entertainment that comes into their living and they enjoy on their TV is pumped through this little website service. They don’t have subscribe to cable TV anymore.
Boxee is a downloadable application that runs on your system and helps you find, organize and enjoy the wide variety of online video content that’s available on the world-wide-web. Imagine it kind of like an application that serves like a Web Guide of sorts for your computer.
You can enjoy Boxee entertainment options from the desktop app that runs on your computer, or you can hook your computer to your TV and/or entertainment system and get all the great content streamed right to your living room.
Boxee delivers more than just video content though, they also help you stream photos, and even streaming radio from sites like Pandora and Last.fm. The Boxee interface reminds me a bit of the Nintendo Wii Channels the way it’s all the different options are organized.
Boxee runs on Apple, Linux, Windows and Apple TV. They’ve also partnered with D-Link to create the Boxee Box, a stand alone piece of hardware with all the functionality of Boxee and looks sweet sitting on your entertainment system. It has everything you need to get things going from the Web to your TV.
