Business productivity plummeted today as everyone was eagerly anticipating the latest announcement from Apple. Turns out the big deal was the release of the Apple tablet, known as the iPad. More intimate than a laptop and more capable than your smart phone.
The question is who is the iPad marketed towards? Will users purchase it in addition to their iPhone and their MacBook? Will they buy it instead of one or the other? At $499 for the lowest model related to features and storage space, how much is it worth to you?
Here are the basic features available for the device:
- 9.7" screen
- 0.5" thick
- 1.5 pounds
- 16 GB – $499
- 32 GB – $599
- 64 GB – $699
- Wi-Fi enabled
- Bluetooth connectivity
- 10 hour battery life
- 16 GB 3G model – $629 (+ $14.99 or $29.99/mnth data plan)
- 32 GB 3G model – $729 (+ $14.99 or $29.99/mnth data plan)
- 64 GB 3G model – $829 (+ $14.99 or $29.99/mnth data plan)
Is all that worth it for the device? My opinion is the higher end models with more features could be a formidable replacement for a laptop, but the price difference and ongoing monthly data plans.
I’ve heard developers complain already that there’s so much difference between the iPhone and the iPad that separate versions of applications will have to be developed to take advantage of both’s strengths.
Will it replace the Kindle DX? Or the Barnes and Noble Nook? Based on price it would be a hard sell as both devices will soon be having apps functionality. It will immediately sell quite a few though just because it’s from Apple.
