VWDExpress-error

This is a new error I received the other day while working in Visual Web Developer Express. Didn’t find much useful information on the error when I searched for the error on the Internet.

Hasn’t happened again, so I’ll probably stop worrying about it. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this one recently.

BAD SITE: www.PartyTentCity.com

partytentcity

I’m almost ashamed to even highlight the PartyTentCity website on Uncover the Internet, but it’s like a bad car crash, you can’t turn away from the horror of it all.

The top design is bad enough you think. Text ads everywhere, but you’ve yet to scroll down and see the other 98 “sections”.

I think there is at some point a font and or color they missed putting on the site.

If you’re the owner of this website please let me know how much you’re making from the advertising revenue to justify this design.

This post has now inspired me to add another category to Uncover the Internet. In the theme of Web Pages That Suck, we’ve added “Website Design Crimes“.

Yahoo! Photos Shuts Down

On June - 27 - 2007 Comments Off

Just received an e-mail from Yahoo! letting me know they’re shutting down the Yahoo! Photos service. They are of course migrating everyone over to your choice of options, with the obvious encouragement to choose flickr.

We will officially close Yahoo! Photos on Thursday, September 20, 2007, at 9 p.m. PDT. Until then, we are offering you the opportunity to move to another photo sharing service (Flickr, KODAK Gallery, Shutterfly, Snapfish, or Photobucket), download your original-resolution photos back to your computer, or buy an archive CD from our featured partner (for users of the New Yahoo! Photos only). All you need to do is tell us what to do with your photos before we close, after which any photos remaining on Yahoo! Photos will be deleted and no longer accessible.

Of course, we hope you’ll join us at Flickr (you can even use your Yahoo! ID), but we also realize that Flickr may not be for everyone. In the end, we want you to find the service that’s right for you, and we hope you take some time to learn more about your options before making this important decision.

That’s what I did. Now, I just need to decide if I want to pay the upgrade to increase my account standing on flickr to “Pro” status.

What are you doing?

Alert: A few choice words in the dialogue. Some bleeped out.

This is perhaps the funniest Star Wars video I’ve ever seen. It keeps disappearing from the net and getting taken down but hopefully this one will be up for awhile.

The video was produced by the folks at Adult Swim.

Medical Bills Are Depressing

On June - 26 - 2007 Comments Off

The good news is, we’ve been making some headway over the past couple of years on our debt situation. The bad news is I just went through all of our medical bills and have seriously depressed myself.

The medical bills total = $7563.64

All but a few hundred of that is due to my recent gall bladder surgery that wasn’t paid for because of crappy insurance. We were?sold coverage that didn’t pay?the way we were told it would when we discussed it with our insurance agents in our living room.

Anyone that’s got some extra money just lying around, feel free to send me some cash via PayPal. You could send it to [email protected]. Okay, I’m kidding. Okay, not really.

New Version of PayPal in Beta

paypal-beta

PayPal has been the de facto standard for online payment methods since I’ve been on the Internet and needed a way to pay people. Originally I used it for paying for items I’d won on eBay, but now I use it for payment of client invoices and even donations on some client websites.

I noticed today that they’re beta testing a new version of their homepage and I’ll say it’s a nice, well-organized improvement from their existing website. The old site wasn’t bad, but I believe this takes it up a notch as far as being a user-friendly, professional looking design.

Check-out PayPal if you ever need to give or receive money online, if you’d like to test it out by sending me some money, just let me know in the comments and I’ll send you an invoice for a few bucks. =)

Yahoo! LAUNCHcast Offline Today

On June - 26 - 2007 Comments Off

In our office we keep LAUNCHcast humming all day listening to music to keep us active and motivated with different channels at different points during the day. We’re listening to it now, specifically the “Victor Wooten Fan Station”.

I just received an e-mail though stating they were taking LAUNCHcast offline today in protest.

Apologies to anyone who was hoping to listen to free LAUNCHcast today. We’re shutting down the Internet’s #1 radio service for the day to draw attention to the outrageous rates recently set by the Copyright Royalty Board in Washington, D.C.. We are doing so alongside thousands of webcasters including Pandora, MTV, Real/Rhapsody, WXPN.com, KCRW.com, and many many others. For a more complete list, check Kurt Hanson’s site, RAIN. AOL and Clear Channel stand out as the only two online broadcasters too corporate to show their solidarity (sorry, Lisa :) ).

Hopefully you’ll be seeing lots about today’s protest in the press, and most importantly I hope you’ll let your representatives in Washington know how you feel. Please visit the SaveNetRadio. org site where they make this easy for you. We need your help between now and July 15th when the first payments are due under the new royalty rates.

For the full story, check out Ian’s blog post here:

Go hear to tell your representatives what you think about this issue:

It’s still playing now, so not sure when this audio blackout is taking place today. Not sure what we’ll do when that happens though.

no-swimming-or-wading

There’s probably something technically wrong for me uncovering something on my personal blog, but I just posted this picture I took and thought you all might enjoy it for the humor factor of it all.

Anyone else find this as funny as I have every time I drive by this particular corner in Anderson, IN.

Do you know of other silly pictures like this on the web? Have you taken some yourself? I’d love to see them and share them with our readers. Leave me a comment and let me know.

No Swimming in Anderson Indiana Fountains

I’ve driven by the fountain and sign above probably half a dozen times now and laughed every time. The last time I happened to have my camera and grabbed this shot, maybe it will make you laugh as well.

You may not be able to tell from the photo, but this little “swimmin’ hole” is about 6′ across and maybe 6″ deep. The folks of Anderson, IN have got it pretty bad if the public is so regularly jumping in this little puddle to cool off that it requires them to place?a sign up asking them nicely not to do so.

innertube

I’ve been really enjoying CBS’ innertube service. I had used it in the past to catch up on some of CBS’ most popular TV shows that I failed to TiVo, but now you can pretty much find any program you want that appears on CBS now.

This weekend I’ve been using the site to catch-up on the new reality show “Pirate Master”. I had been interested in watching this show, but for whatever reasons missed the first couple of episodes and hadn’t watched the ones I’d recorded.

CBS innertube allowed me to watch the premiere and second episodes of the series.

Catch-up on your favorite CBS shows as well, or uncover a new show you hadn’t thought about watching before hand. One of the best benefits is that you can watch a 1-hour show in less than 45 minutes since the episodes are missing all the commercials.

Side Note: Although an obvious knock-off of Survivor, Pirate Master is very interesting because they’ve inserted enough differences and rules to make the strategy of playing the game differently. One thing I really like is that the crews change-up for each challenge expedition. This along with some other changes keeps the possibility of alliances forming a much more difficult task. You can stay  up to the minute on all your favorite reality TV shows over at RealityExploits.com

New Version of Plaxo

On June - 24 - 2007 Comments Off

plaxo3

I was pleasantly surprised this evening when I logged onto Plaxo to grab a friends phone number and saw a message about getting a preview of the beta version of their next release.

I went ahead and moved forward with switching to the beta version and testing things out and I can tell you that I think the layout updates and improvements are a good thing. The site just feels more useful and well-arranged now.

My friend really hammered me for a long time about signing up and using Plaxo, which I’d never agreed to because I thought they’d just use my address as a spam magnet. Through much convincing, he finally won the argument and I signed up. I’ve been pleased ever since, especially the times I’ve crashed a computer and didn’t have to worry about losing my address book.

If you haven’t heard of Plaxo, go check them out, but here’s a few of the features and services you can look forward to as a user:

  • synchronized contacts between Outlook and Yahoo (which I use) and numerous other contact management tools and systems
  • online address book access and back-ups
  • calendars and notes synchs
  • automatic birthday reminders
  • automatic information updates from other Plaxo users that are in your address book
  • centralized online IM clients via Meebo in new v3.0
    Real Time Web Analytics
