The Picture Tools ribbon could very well be in my Top 5 list of new features in Office 2007. I’m regularly working with images in my day job, with blogging and with my variety of web clients. For most of my work I’m using a variety of programs ranging from the free Irfanview, to SnagIt, to the full-featured Macromedia Fireworks MX.
But for quick editing of images and making some creative changes to graphics, Word has started to become fairly full-featured for the average home user.
Here’s the new packaging you should be looking for when you’re browsing your favorite software retailer shopping for the next version of Microsoft Office suite.
I’ve been running Office 2007 now for about 6 months or so across the various iterations. I’ve been pleased with the new features and organization of information. It does take a little bit of getting used to and finding some of the lesser used features, but that’s the whole point right. Anything you’re going to be using regularly is right up front, right where you need it when you need it.
The new Office suite will be availalbe in the following variations with prices:
Office 2007 should be available to general public in January 2007 or shortly thereafter.

Anybody got a fix?

New packaging format for Microsoft’s next operating system and Office suite software. Now you can be sure and find it in the store when you’re looking to purchase it. Who are we kidding? Do you think you’d actually be able to miss the display for the new software once it’s available? I don’t think so.
Vista will be available in the following flavors:
I’ll be purchasing the Ultimate version upgrade myself.

I was speaking with a friend of mine a few days ago and we got to talking about the new Mac ads. He had the suggestion that to really push the software and show what it can do, instead of just talking about how cool it is not to be a PC, is to completely develop and produce the Mac commercials using an out of the box Apple computer that an everyday consumer would use.
How about it Apple? Are you up to the challenge?

An area that hasn’t gotten much press with all the talk about Vista, IE7 and the new Office 2007, is lowly Outlook Express.
The Lifehacker site has a great gallery of screen shots and details about the application. Gina Trapani wasn’t too impressed with the developments although she did state it was still a nice upgrade to Outlook Express.
But when I dove into Windows Mail (I’m running Vista RC 1), I was a bit disappointed. Is Windows Mail an update to Outlook Express? Definitely. The contact management and built-in Junk mail filtering is really nice. But would I consider giving up Thunderbird for it? No way.
I’m running Outlook 2007 and am VERY happy with my experience with the upgrade. I do have plenty of clients that are still using Outlook Express for their e-mail client, as well as having my mom running Thunderbird for her e-mail. As always, we’ll see how everything plays out in the end.
I just stumbled across the WriteAbout.Us blog site because they mentioned b5media in their list and I saw the trackback for the site. They’ve really put together a pretty exhaustive list of some great sites out there, some of which we’ve highlighted here. He gave quite a bit of coverage to a variety of social bookmarking and article voting sites like Digg.com, but that’s okay, it’s his list right? They didn’t share specifically, but it looks like the vast majority of his 100 sites are focused towards bloggers and others interested in starting, supporting and building a business online.
Anyway, I’m sure there are at least a couple of sites on their list you may have never visited or forgot you did and it got lost in your bookmarks.

There seems to be something in the water don’t you think? I mean Google buys YouTube for over $1.5B and that just puts everyone in the shopping mood. I guess it make sense though, there’s only about 55 more days until Christmas right?
FORTUNE has learned from multiple sources that Yahoo (Charts) recently approached Time Warner (Charts) (parent of FORTUNE’s publisher) about buying America Online – essentially trying to jump-start talks that broke down a year ago. A source close to Yahoo disputes that Yahoo approached Time Warner and says that there are no active conversations between the two companies. Regardless of which version is correct, a Yahoo-AOL merger would be a face-saver for Semel: Last year Google (Charts) outflanked Yahoo and swooped in to become AOL’s exclusive Internet search provider, picking up a 5% stake in AOL for $1 billion as part of the deal.
I don’t like this idea and it probably has more to do with how Duncan (thanks for the tip) feels about it as well. It just means one less player in the market to keep everyone on their toes. I’ve shared my thoughts before on AOL, and think that getting out of the ISP market and move purely into the content arena is exactly where AOL needs to be now. I believe they should really try to move themselves into any content that could be considered popular in America. The epicenter of pop-culture if you will. Really capitalize on becoming the idea behind being “America: Online”.

Vincent is proclaiming that it may not be too far down the pike when Google decides to purchase FeedBurner, or some other online companies to expand their presence in an ever widening array of areas. It seems it would be all for the right reasons, more eyeballs, and FeedBurner would absolutely give them that.
