Was a client site today and presented with a word that doesn’t exist, but why not?

When working on a database you can add, delete or update a record, right?

If you’ve added a record, it’s been an addition.

If you’ve deleted a record, it’s been a deletion.

If you’ve updated a record, why isn’t it an “updation”

Windows Desktop Search

I’ve still been unable to install Windows Desktop Search, in coordination with Outlook 2007. I keep getting an error when I try to install. I’m wondering if any of you brilliant people who’ve also been testing out Outlook 2007 along with me.

I get the following two error messages during the install.

Windows Desktop Search Error 2

Windows Desktop Search Error 1

After I click on “OK” on that last one, the program immediately stops the installation process and reverses everything it’s started.

Any ideas out there anyone?

Seems like Mozilla and Firefox don’t want there to be too many trees killed with the senseless printing of web pages. Can someone please tell me why there’s no “Print” functionality with a right-click on a webpage in Firefox?

Microsoft CRM 3.0

On July - 28 - 2006 Comments Off

I’ve been doing some research for a client that needs to migrate contact information from one CRM tool and into Microsoft’s CRM 3.0. What I’m having problems finding out is what the table structure is for the contact data so that we can map and translate the data from one database into another one.

In searching I found this blog post from Matthew Wittemann and his experiences with a Microsoft CRM 1.2 Redeployment. He shares his experiences and maybe more importantly his pitfalls and obstacles. Good information if you might be forced to walk this path in the future or have to do something similar.

Regretfully, I still haven’t found what I’m looking for. Wouldn’t that make a great song?

Why am I up this late?

It’s 2:00am and I have to go to work tomorrow.

This is what happens though when you commit to having a “guys night out” with your son and you play catch for a couple of hours in the park. After that we came home and he played Xbox Tiger Woods ’06 for a little bit. Then he wanted me to play with him some more on there.

Got back to working on the computer about 11:30pm. It’s definitely time to start shutting ‘er down though. I’ve narrowed down my “To Do” task list for clients by about 20 items. And that doesn’t include the random things here and there I’ve accomplished as well (like this blog entry and others.)

After returning from New Orleans I’m working through various requests from clients for modifications they’d like to have made on their website. This is something I’ve taken care of for a client of mine (actually my longest paying client) for the past 7 years.

So, I’m grabbing their e-mail and saving and opening the attached PDF which is a semi-regular newsletter type of thing. Before I open the PDF, I surf over to their site real quick to see the stats and determine what other types of updates I should make while I’m working on their site.

Lo and behold, the ENTIRE site has been redesigned. Now, considering I’m considered the “webmaster” and they paid my invoice last month, you’d think I would have heard at least a whisper of a redesign being in the works. Not so.

So, I just sent an e-mail to the Executive Director and my main contact in the corporate office to ask if they’re still in need of my services.

Maybe I’ll hear something tomorrow.

AOL to be FREE by August 2nd?

On July - 27 - 2006 Comments Off

It looks like AOL may be moving forward with going FREE as I had reported on earlier.

Investors in Time Warner Inc., whose shares touched a two-year low in mid-July, are seeking signs of a turnaround on August 2, when the world’s largest media company is set to introduce its fourth plan in five years to save its online unit AOL.

and

“I think a lot is riding on August 2,” said Larry Haverty, a portfolio manager at Gamco Investors, which owned 14.1 million shares of Time Warner as of March 31. “People like us have been patient with strategy. From what I’ve heard, I’m comfortable.

and this

“They should have done what they contemplated two years ago to aggressively develop AOL as a web service,” said Morris Mark at Mark Asset Management, which owns 1.22 million Time Warner shares as of March 31. “Its position is so much more powerful than the advertising revenue that they’re generating.

As I stated before, I think this is a brilliant idea for AOL. It’s too bad they can’t just drop their entire dial-up service. I’m wondering if it’s possible for them to sell them off to the higher bidder (like NetZero, or somebody like that).

Domain Name Ownership – IE7.COM

On July - 26 - 2006 Comments Off

How’d Microsoft let this one slip by? Wouldn’t you think they’d register pretty much any variation of a new project/application’s name?

It’s not what you’d expect.

Spam Countermeasures

On July - 25 - 2006 Comments Off

This post isn’t directly related to Office Outlook 2007, but more spam control measures in general.

I’ve been working with an webhosting provider for a client and tweaking the spam and custom content filtering controls. I’ve got things setup and it’s all working pretty well. My biggest challenge right now is catching and identifying e-mail messages that initially look like a normal text message, but are a single large image.

Does anyone know of a way to identify messages that are constructed like this without eliminating all HTML email entirely?

Adam Pash provides a great overview and solution to people who may not need the features and complexities of a full-blown desktop Office suite. Adam feels that both Microsoft Office and OpenOffice are too bloated for his needs.

Before you go getting too riled up, I’m not heralding the death of the desktop Office suite. If you need and use Office programs daily and you use the more advanced features, their web counterparts are light-years away. But if you don’t use them that regularly and all you use Word for is opening forwards or composing resumes, you can probably get away without it. Personally, I have no need for a desktop office suite at the moment.

Gmail Time Sink?

On July - 25 - 2006 Comments Off

I love Gmail as my webmail application of choice, but Outlook gives me all the other things that I’m interested in for managing more of my business specific e-mail needs.

There’s not really a comparison in my book between these two applications. The biggest common denominator is that they’re both e-mail tools.

Do you get distracted  when you’re checking your Gmail though? I’ve never really thought about it really, but Michael McCracken seems to have a problem focusing and BurgerBlog has written a tiny browser to help him out.

This really isn’t a problem for me. At least I don’t think it is. Gmail interface is pretty minimalistic and I don’t get too caught up in having multiple windows open. In fact, my normal working arrangement is a few Firefox windows open with multiple tabs in each, and a IE6 window or two open with the Yahoo! Toolbar giving me tab functionality in the browser.

But, if this type of thing is for you, then it’s probably right up your alley right?
