For anyone that really wants to decide for themselves between OpenOffice and Microsoft Office.
Microsoft today announced the opening of a “test drive” so that people can see what Microsoft Office 2007 looks like.
The OpenOffice.org Community invites potential upgraders to go one better – download the full OpenOffice.org 2 office suite today for a test drive, and if you like it, use it free for as long as you like.
I just read this little article on Digg. I recently was performing some PC support for a friend who thought they had Word installed at one time, but after a crash couldn’t find their CD’s. I installed OpenOffice on their machine so they could at least open Office file attachments when they received them from others. I was impressed by everything it could do, even though it was no full-featured match for the actual Microsoft Office suite.

I’m coming closer and closer to downloading this beta with screenshots and functionality like this. Check out the gallery provided on this post at Lifehacker.
I just added a new poll to the site, look over there on the right. It’s a question about piracy and whether or not companies (not just Microsoft) should have the right to actively go after piracy. The first “Yes” option includes Microsoft activity of actively interacting with already installed software on a users local machine. The second “Yes” option is more do whatever they can to stop piracy from being spread by people selling pirated software, i.e., get it before it’s installed. Once I’ve installed it, keep your hands out of my machine.
The big news now is that the Windows Genuine Advantage program may have a kill switch. If you remember, the WGA was under scrutiny recently due to it’s E.T. complex to phone home regularly. Microsoft has said they may change that to contact Redmond a little less regularly.
However, now the news is that installing the WGA may not be optional if you’re interested in receiving the latest updates from Microsoft on their systems. It’s also stated that if WGA doesn’t see a legitimate copy of Windows installed on the machine, it gives you a 30-day deadline to get a genuine copy or you will be shutdown.
The latest podcast of Buzz Outloud really had some issues with this and honestly I don’t care. Is there problem the fact that it’s a little, additional 3rd party program you’re now forced to download and install if you want to receive updates? Or is it the fact that it calls home? Or is it the fact that it will have the ability to shut down the functionality of the computer if you’re running an illegitimate copy of Windows? Here’s my response:
What are everyone else’s thoughts on this matter? I’d love to get into a little bit of a debate about this.
I’ve finally done it. I’ve maxed out the storage on my 6GB Mini. It’s mainly due to a veritable plethora of podcasts I’ve subscribed to lately. I’m sure a few of them will be unsubscribed at some point in the future.

I keep getting the following errors on start-up and shut-down in Excel 2007. Anyone else seeing these and have a solution?

You’ve got to visit the Engadget website for a great photo of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates having dinner together.
It’s a caption contest, so be sure and leave your best remark up there for all to see. Here’s mine:
“Steve, I can’t believe you got me a MacMini running Vista for Christmas!”
