Buh-Bye Lowe’s

Well, it’s finally happened. I got a new job as a Project Recruiter for a recruitment firm. Currently they’re focused in the pharma industry but are looking to expand to other industries. I believe there are some great opportunities there, I just need to work hard and try my best to out perform everyone else.

Ah, and one of the best parts? No more retail hours. Hello nights and weekends!!! That used to fit better with my cellphone plan than an actual description of my life.

To the Big Man Above, thanks again!

Spurred on by middle brother

Just finished reading my brother’s blog. Seems we’re both in similar areas of life. I believe he’s doing a much better job of it than myself. Patience and perserverance, that’s what I need.

The past few days have been quite eventful. Things begin by my full-time job in retail deciding to cut my hours 25% due to low sales volume. I understand, easiest thing to cut is payroll. I actually should write a separate blog about some of my opinions on what used to be one of my favorite stores.

Had a good lunch meeting with a successful businessman from our church. He’s been a great encouragement to me and my family, and he may not be quite aware of just how much. So, thank you Matt! Not the one Matt, this is a new one, but either way, they’re both a welcome addition to my network of friends. Anyway, this newest Matt has given me a couple of job leads, both of which seem very promising. Should be having a conversation about one of them tomorrow at church. Let’s pray something happens soon. I GOTTA KEEP REMEMBERING THAT PATIENCE AND PERSERVERANCE PART!!!

My 5 year old son also had his first basketball game today. He scored at least 4 times, maybe more. At this point though, it’s basically just herd ball. Very little dribbling, passing, or scoring, but he definitely seems to be having a good time. Mom and dad are enjoying his interest as well.

The downer of the day was that upon attempting to leave from basketball, the van wouldn’t start. You can read previous posts about it, but basically the fuel pump has “given it all she’s got Captain!”. No more pushing it. I don’t want to risk my family getting stranded out somewhere in weather that’s all too familiar in Indianapolis this time of year. So, there went $565. Thanks to my in-laws for helping us out on that. Don’t really want to think about how much I owe them, both literally and figuratively. I hate being indebted to anyone. AH, THERE IT IS AGAIN! PATIENCE AND PERSERVERANCE.

I BELIEVED and still will!!!

It’s a tough day to be a Colts fan. A very lackluster performance by the Colts. BUT! They’re still my team. I’m not going to trash the Colts for “failing” again in New England. What I will do is give a LOT of credit to New England and Bill Belichik. They just have a way of taking their opponents, whomever it is, off of their games. For all of you people that were Colts fans before yesterday and now want to trash them, do us all a favor and just keep your mouth shut and let’s wait till next year.

Church as a Family Meal

Had another good conversation with Matt yesterday at lunch. We got to talking about the purpose of church and what church should look like, or maybe more accurately how the family of God should act. Well, guess that’s wrong too, we shouldn’t “act” like anything, that’s part of the problem anyway.

He mentioned that maybe the purpose of the church service isn’t for the lost, but more accurately, just for Christians. A time for us to raise each other up, recharge, refocus and recommit to doing the work of winning the lost once we leave the service.

Then we started speaking about the analogy of the family meal. Everyone sits down together and relates to one another and to the activities of the day. We’re involved in this family, there’s commitment, belonging and roles for each member.

Now, sometimes we get all cleaned up, spend all day in the kitchen preparing food, clean the house, get out our best silver and china, the kids are on their best behaviour and everyone is perfectly polite and hospitable to each other. We invite some friends over and have a wonderful time. Then we think, that was so much fun, we should do it more often, then we decide to hire a professional cook, maybe some servers to take care of thing, we get someone else to come and clean the house and make it a big event. We invite more people over and we begin to think this is the way it’s always done and the way it should be done all the time. BUT, we’ve lost the atmosphere of the family meal. We’re not being “real” with each other, and the friends that we invite over may think this is the way we eat and behave every meal. But we all know it’s not even close.

Now imagine this “meal” is a church service. Professionals are all hired to do the job so we don’t have to spend the time doing it ourselves or get our own hands dirty. The “friends” we invite over are the unchurched, unsaved that we want to bring into the church and “save”.

In this metaphor, I think two bad things happen:

1.) Our friends think as Christians our worlds are perfect, we eat like kings & queens off the finest placeware, are kids are angels and always obey, and we never ever yell at them or each other. Again, we know it’s all a big facade, and we’re making these people think this is what it means to be “Christian”. We’re perfect and everything’s rosey. Then when they see us in one of our normal “meals”, kids pouting and screaming, mom & dad not even looking at each other, as we sit around and eat nuked hotdogs and baked beans off of paper plates, we’re labeled hypocrites. Is it any wonder?

2.) Maybe our friends make it to a couple of our meals and see this perfect little charade. Yet, they know they can’t get their kids to behave, they don’t feel like going anywhere with each other as a couple and are afraid their dirty, life-worn belongings will make a mess in this perfect family’s life. So, future invitations are refused, excuses are given and they go back to their own homes thinking they’re the only ones just existing and nothing else.

Don’t get me wrong, I think there’s always a place for special events and breaks from the ordinary and mundane. However, let’s not get caught up and pretend that it’s the way it always is and maybe even should be. But maybe it would be more worthwhile to invite those people we tread this world with into our homes and lives and let them see the real us. The ones that have problems, the ones that struggle just like they do, and have figured out there’s something or, more accurately, someONE that makes it bearable and gives us the strength to keep going.

Colts & Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper

The two don’t have anything in common, at least not for reasons of blogging. My wife visited Kansas City and said they had Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper there and it was fabulous! She just couldn’t wait until it made it to our little Circle City. Picked some up at the store this evening, and she’s right, pretty tasty stuff.

Colts play our nemesis New England Patriots. Lots of news chatter about the match-up, can they do it, field conditions, injured Patriots. Guess with all the weather the field is in pretty bad shape and Patriot fans are giving themselves the advantage for playing in those conditions since we’re used to indoor stadium. I believe it’s going to be a close game, I’d really like for the Colts to blow them out, just to squelch the excuses if we only beat them by a touchdown or something. GO COLTS! By the way, the phone WILL NOT be answered on Sunday afternoon, so don’t call me.
