I think the only positive use of that word is if I were speaking of the circumference of the waist of my jeans. Regretfully, I use the word in the most common term, of being without gainful employment.
The actual date I was notified of my new experience in life was February 24th. Since that time, my official last day has been post-poned on a couple of occasions due to pursuit of various internal positions within my company. To explain, the downsizing was the decision of the account I was dedicated to, not the company that actually writes my paycheck. However, today I am in the middle of a self-imposed week of paid vacation. This was done to pro-long my “life” in the corporate system of my employer, in case any of the other internal opportunities panned out in the next few days, which I doubt is going to happen. The other benefit was to extend health benefits for my family through the end of April.
My little professional career security blank was ripped off like a table cloth at a magic show. Painfully, dishes, utensils and centerpiece didn’t remain unphased. This has been quite the blow. I had a lead that felt pretty solid with a great company, and I think would have been a tremendous opportunity. I felt really good about the interview and thought I’d be chosen for the position. However, that was not to be the case either. I’m sure there’s going to be a lesson learned in all of this that I can’t see right now, the only thing I know I’ve already learned is that there is no job-security.
So, I’m pounding the web at every career site I can think of and updating my resume. One of the hurdles I’m experiencing is taking what was a solid-experience history in the travel industry and regurgitating it as the skills that were developed during that time and translate them into opportunities in other industries. Just need someone to give me a chance. The other hurdle? I’ve been blessed to have made good enough money since getting married to allow my wife to raise the kids instead of “the village” that everyone speaks of, doesn’t everyone know every village has at least one idiot?
May God bless my efforts and keep me calm through the storm. I know He can provide and does, sometimes it’s just hard applying that knowledge in a way that disperses the worry and anxiety of the current situation.
Recently got into a discussion about the salaries of sports figures. The more I seem to get in these types of discussions, the more I see myself in the minority of an opinion. I can’t say I “don’t care” how much someone else makes, mainly because I find myself wishing to make more of my own. However, I will NOT state that someone makes “too much”. My feeling is that I then should be a target for everyone else that makes less than I do.
The big argument I always hear is how can an athelete have a multi-million dollar contract, and teachers aren’t paid nearly what they’re worth? I agree, teachers are under paid, but if people paid $40+ to sit in a desk every day to learn, then there’d be money to pay the teachers. If you think atheletes make too much money: don’t watch a game, don’t go to a game, don’t buy any paraphanelia remotely related to their sport or team. You’ll have more of your own money to spend, and be contributing less to theirs!
What I do believe is that to whom much is given, much is expected. I expect someone to be charitable with what they are given, I’m guilty of not being as charitable as I should sometimes, and maybe sometimes generous to a point of bad stewardship.
A new thought that developed in this latest conversation was that taxing a community because a sports team wants a new stadium doesn’t seem right. The cost of building a new stadium, should be voluntary to those citizens that want to contribute, corporate sponsors, team owners, and the players themselves. For the average citizen, we can’t afford a ticket to the games as it is now.
After a recent discussion with my sis-in-law about burning your own “mix” CD’s from your friend’s originals, I feel it’s time to post my thoughts for everyone to read. I don’t understand how people can’t see the error in their logic. My favorite is, but I just want one song from this artist, I don’t like all of their stuff. Why should I have to buy the entire album. My response, for the same reason it’s still stealing for me to take one article of clothing from 7 different stores to make one great outfit. Or, how about, they make enough money. I see, and how many millions of other people would look at you and think, “They make enough money, I’m just going to steal their car anyway.” Here it is, laid out. Regardless of the value you’re putting on something, taking something (including copying) that’s not yours is theft! Deal with it and stop trying to reason away your logic for why it’s okay.
Someone please respond, I want to know if at least one person agrees with me on this one.
